Hey, Guys: Now You Can Hide Your Junk Where The Rest Of It Is

This article is more than 10 years old.

First off, let me say that - as a woman - I don't get it. This week, two guys launched a Kickstarter for a pair of underwear that features a secret pocket you-know-where. Yes, there is that bra that allows women to stash their iPhone in their bra. But these briefs - called Speakeasys - "are an innovative combination of fashion and function" for men.  The guys behind the project say "They offer a style that says, 'you should see me in my underwear,' while providing a pocket that says, 'it’s none of your business what’s in my underwear.'

The founders of Speakeasys are Jeff Schneider and Dan Goldman. I had a chance to ask them about this innovative underwear, especially since I was a little confused about just how much room there really was "down there" for any more stuff, including things such as passports, wallets, keys, cell phones, and flasks. Schneider says that "While we do have plenty of pockets, we have an alarming shortage of secret pockets. We've found that there are times when normal pockets just don't cut it, for example when traveling abroad, going to music festivals, and wearing costumes -- as we continually find ourselves at themed parties here in San Francisco," which is where Schneider and Goldman are from.

As for why Schneider and Goldman chose to utilize this space in particular, Schneider explained "We had friends who had tried to hide things down there in the past with limited success, so we decided to see if we could design something to fit a few items down there comfortably and discretely. We weren't really sure if our idea was going to work until we made prototypes. Once we tested them out, we knew we had something. Taking a flask into a music festival isn't really about the money savings (though it's a nice plus), it's about not being fenced off in a cramped beer garden missing all the music. We also love to travel but wearing a travel belt is less than desirable."

While I still have my doubts, guys seem to love the idea. Even though the Kickstarter project just launched a few days ago, Schneider and Goldman are just barely $1000 shy of their $10,000 goal. And for any naysayers worried about potential side effects of stashing things like an iPhone "down there" (similar to the concern people had that keeping an iPhone in a bra could cause cancer,) Schneider says "We're more concerned with what could happen if you don't have Speakeasy Briefs! Whether travelling, going to a music festival or just going on a jog, we think nearly everyone could benefit from having a secret pocket. Nobody was injured in the testing of our briefs -- we feel pretty safe unavailing them to the public."

If Speakeasys seem like something that could solve your problems (or the problems of a man in your life,) be sure to check out the Kickstarter project. If you pledge $19 or more, you'll even receive your very own pair later this summer.
