Why did former United States president Barack Obama label Venezuela an “extraordinary threat” back in 2015? Why has the current US president Joe Biden followed in the footsteps of Obama and Donald Trump and strengthened sanctions against the South American country?

Independent journalist and podcaster Rodrigo Acuña has teamed up with journalist Nicholas Ford to answer these questions and more in a new documentary, Venezuela: The Cost of Challenging an Empire.

The filmmakers have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project with a modest fundraising target of $7000. Acuña told Green Left the project is driven by “passion and commitment with serious independent journalism, and working people everywhere who deserve real information in contrast to the garbage they are fed in the mainstream corporate media”.

“This documentary is about the political process in Venezuela, the violence this country has witnessed and most importantly the impact of US economic sanctions,” said Acuña, who hosts the Indestructible podcast on alborada.net.
