Ghost Follows leads through Kickstarter
With Halloween only a little over a month away, it's time to start thinking about stocking up on treats. Candy, sure, but also a little seasonal gaming fun, such as Open Arcana's Ghost Follows, a "spooky but warmhearted" haunted house adventure that is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter in order to finish in time to launch next month.
The game is set in a spooky old mansion long believed to be cursed. Undeterred by local legend, one young trick-or-treater ventures inside and suddenly "the energy goes through the roof and the house comes alive." Rather than seeking to frighten her away, however, the "knocks, bumps and flickering lights seem to be attempts at communication with the brave young adventurer." The more she explores, the more "love letters written by the resident ghosts" she finds. Even more curiously, within them are clues to a much larger riddle of what's binding them here against their will. By collecting keys and unlocking all the doors in the mansion, you "might just be able to help the trapped spirits escape."
Heavily inspired by Disney's Haunted Mansion, the game seeks to emulate the "thrilling and adventurous atmosphere found in haunted theme park attractions." Presented in third-person 3D with a 360-degree rotatable camera, Ghost Follows sees players directly guiding the young witch-costumed protagonist through the old manor, occasionally using a flashlight to light up its "darker corners." With each new key you discover you'll gain access to another locked room, adding "fun twists" in what turns out to be a "mansion-wide puzzle." While there will be "subtle scares here and there," the game is intended for all ages as a "warmhearted response to [the developers'] love for the spooky and fun spirit of Halloween."
Originally conceived as part of the one-week Epic Megajam earlier this year, now the husband-and-wife team behind Ghost Follows aim to expand it into a more complete adventure with "multiple new rooms" to explore and a reworked central puzzle premise. To do that, they have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $6,000 US by October 15th. While most crowdfunded projects ask backers to wait many months or even years, the goal here is to fully complete the game in a single month's time, launching on Steam for Windows PC before the witching hour of Halloween arrives.
