Kickstart some art: Cool projects in need of cash

Whitney Matheson, USA TODAY

Our biweekly Kickstarter feature has helped get some very interesting projects off the ground, from comics to short films. Here's another batch of cool-sounding projects that could use some cash. Feel free to send any tips to popcandy@usatoday.com or @popcandy.

An Emily the Strange Kickstarter has less than two days to go.

1. My Days of Losing Words. I can sympathize with photographer Rachael Jablo, who suffers from chronic migraines. Once she realized she could no longer take the same kinds of photographs she used to, Rachael began documenting her experience with the debilitating headaches. She hopes to raise $20,000 to publish a photo book. (Miraculously, I've only had about five migraines since I was pregnant. I hope they never, ever return to what they once were.)

2. CHUG!. Normally I don't write about huge Kickstarter projects — this one is asking for $500,000 — but I do enjoy Zane Lamprey, former host of the drinking series Three Sheets. He wants to make a new series, and he boldly proposes the largest TV Kickstarter yet.

3. Emily the Strange Animated Rock 'n' Roll Single. The title pretty much says it all, but if you love Emily (and I do!) you might want to help. Incentives include comics and music, and they only have about 40 hours to go to meet their goal.

4. Pirate Pancake Griddle. Would you like to make pancakes with a skull and crossbones on them? For me, the answer is yes. For $93, you get the griddle.

5. The Tale of Perdita. Animation is a very costly and time-consuming process, and artist Curt Stewart needs help in getting his passion project rolling. He needs $5,000 and has raised slightly more than $1,000; his pitch includes sketches for the film, and they look great. Kickstarter can really make a huge difference for a small, creative project like this.

6. Pucs: Rechargeable Ice. Even though these guys have surpassed their goal by a long shot (They asked for $2,500 and have received $55,000), I'm mentioning it because the product is pretty cool. Give $38, and you'll score six re-chillable, stainless steel "pucks" to chill your beverage. No more watered-down iced coffee!

7. Pixies: A Visual History. Pixies fan/webmaster and longtime Pop Candy reader Sean Rayburn wants to self-publish a beautiful book of photographs of the band. So far he has raised about $10,000, but he needs $150,000. Sean is a good guy, and I trust he'll produce an amazing product. For $75, you get the limited-edition hardcover.
