‘Friday the 13th’-Inspired Game ‘Camp Sunshine’ is Getting a Crowd-Funded Prequel

A few years ago, Bloody Disgusting highlighted a selection of crowd-funded horror games to look out for, and one of those was Fossil Games’ Camp Sunshine, a retrotastic top-down horror RPG inspired heavily by the Friday the 13th series. It was pretty well received, and now, the developer is on the Kickstarter campaign trail once more, looking to release a prequel called Sunshine Manor that jumps beyond its slasher-inspired roots.

Sunshine Manor sees Ada MacReady, the game’s protagonist who has some psychic abilities, trapped inside an ever-shifting mansion, chock-full of ghosts, demonic nasties, and the nefarious Shadow Man. The events in Sunshine Manor will lead directly to those from Camp Sunshine.

Much like its predecessor, Sunshine Manor is a homage to retro gaming and 80s horror, but while the original has a more singular focus on a certain camp-based slasher series, the prequel takes in inspiration from the likes of From Beyond and A Nightmare on Elm Street. In video game terms, it owes a small debt to Resident Evil and The Legend of Zelda.

The Kickstarter campaign offers up some interesting rewards. The Limited Edition cover is being created by artist Graham Humphreys, who was behind some big 80s horror film posters for the likes of The Evil Dead and Basket Case. The exclusive Kickstarter Sunshine Edition of the game features a host of goodies, including the first game, exclusive covers and slipcases, a premium game guide, sweatbands, the soundtrack on a cassette tape, and a VHS-style clamshell to house it all in.

The Kickstarter campaign has 3 weeks to go, and it’s getting fairly close to being fully backed. So if you want to back it, you can still do so over at the official Kickstarter page. The finished product’s release is currently set for November 2021 on Steam, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. There’s a PC demo on the page too, which acts as a 20-minute prologue to the game, and it sets the scene nicely for a fun, spooky adventure.

While you wait for Alien: Romulus, the folks over at Devilworks have cooked up their own slice of “mockbuster” fun with Alien Hunt, and we’re debuting the trailer here on BD this morning.

This brand-new sci-fi horror from director Aaron Mirtes (The Bigfoot Trap, Painted in Blood) is set for its US premiere on May 14, and you can find it on digital thanks to Devilworks.

You can exclusively watch the official trailer for Alien Hunt below, which looks to combine elements of Alien and Predator. This particular “mockbuster” has very little interest in hiding its inspirations, with the alien designs plucked straight out of H.R. Giger’s beautiful brain. Hey, if you’re going to pull from other movies, might as well take from the all-time greats!

In Alien Hunt, “On a hunting trip in the wilderness, a group of siblings discovers an abandoned military outpost on their land, but is it what it seems?

“Their trip takes a sinister turn when they find themselves facing off against a relentless army of extra-terrestrial beings. Suddenly, the hunters become the hunted.

“The formidable squad of alien soldiers will stop at nothing to wipe out the enemy and in an all-out, brutal battle for survival, it’s kill or be killed in Alien Hunt.”

Barron Boedecker (Escape Pod, The Bigfoot Trap), Brent Bentley (The Perfect In-Laws, Haunt Season), Deiondre Teagle (The Visitor, Painted in Blood, Death Ranch), Chelsey Fuller (The Bigfoot Trap, The Silent Natural), Jesse Santoyo (A Nashville Country Christmas, Potter’s Ground), and Adam Pietripaoli (The Bigfoot Trap, The OctoGames) star.
