A new game that looks to capture the aesthetic and style of Nintendo's beloved Star Fox games is being developed by Race The Sun developer Flippfly.

Whisker Squadron is an Action Rail Shooter that sees a crew of cat pilots on a mission to save the galaxy as they fly through randomly-generated levels. This design mechanic will help provide players with unique replay value, with gamers getting to enjoy the story with different levels, make different choices, and choose varying ship upgrades with each playthrough.

Flippfly promises that each game session will feature a series of "progressively more difficult" levels in a range of different environments, all leading to a "final fight for the ages." Developer Aaron San Filippo recently shared some footage of the game in action, showcasing the aesthetic and flying mechanics gamers can look forward to when they take control of their feline pilots.

The game is built utilizing the same technology as Flippfly's previous game, Race The Sun. Leaning into its inspirations, the developer noted how fans of Star Fox, and the franchises supposed cinematic prospects, will feel right at home within the world of Whisker Squadron, highlighting how players will be "delighted" by the modern features they have added in its attempts to modernize a beloved gaming concept.

Whisker Squadron is still in development with Flippfly preparing to launch a Kickstarter to help fund their efforts, so gamers who may be interested in its Star Fox approach can help support the game's development. At the time of writing, there is no information as to what backers may receive, but they can currently sign up to be notified when the Whisker Squadron Kickstarter officially launches.

Whisker Squadron is set to release in 2021 on Steam.
