4 Upcoming Kickstarter Tabletop Gaming Projects – August 2020

Friday is here and so is our brand new “Upcoming Board Games” article. This time in addition to 3 new games we discuss a revolutionary, board gaming related project that was previously a huge hit in Europe. Let’s go!

Geeknson’s Board Gaming Tables – August 2020

The place where you play all your games is almost as important as the games themselves. Feeling comfortable during a short session or a long game night boosts the enjoyment and makes the entire experience miles better. That’s why so many board gamers are starting to look at board game tables, made specifically for their hobby.

Geeknson is an UK based company, that continues Europe’s 400 years long history of crafting uncompromising quality furniture from oaken wood. The company has been in business for over 22 years and now they’ve shifted most of their focus to creating revolutionary board gaming tables. So far, their most famous project called The MEGAN, got wildly popular on Kickstarter and collected almost $700.000 from thousands of satisfied gamers. All of that despite shipping only to Europe and being modestly priced comparing to competitors. With the new campaign, the guys are attempting to get their product to tabletop game enthusiasts in North America

The MEGAN and other products made by the company are highly customizable and allow for endless accessories and extensions from brand new wireless inductive chargers and counter holders to D&D benches and wine glass holders to really level up your gaming experiences.

Many of these will be new and exclusive to Kickstarter. Thanks to the unique card rail system, the amount of attachable additions is endless and you can upgrade your table with new parts as long as you want

The tables themselves will be crafted from 120 years old, high quality Wild European Oak wood (120 years is the minimal age when oaken wood can be used as timber in Europe). The campaign is going to have plenty of surprises  and gadget add-ons (like dice trays) useful in our hobby.

Thrones – August 4th

A pretty interesting project is about to come to Kickstarter next week. Thrones by Chad Anthony Randell mixes plenty of classic wargame inspired ideas with modern board games and a great craftsmanship of its components. The game was designed as a 2 player experience but can be easily expanded into 4 player one if you own an additional copy.

In Thrones you set up your units in secret, which may remind some of you of good old Battleship. Additionally, the board consists of tiles symbolizing various types of terrain. Placing them is also up to you. All units have unique abilities, often related to specific types of terrain which adds a whole new layer to using the surroundings to your advantage. Dragons for example can move 4 tiles, Trebuchets can fire 3 tiles away and Spearmen can attack units staying on water.

Everything mentioned here makes the game highly replayable as each time you play on a different map with differently placed units. If you want to become victorious, you have to capture your enemy’s fortress.

The Kickstarter campaign will launch on August 4th and 10% of the profits will be given to charity. Should Thrones reach its first stretch goal, the number of extra tiles will be increased making the set-up even more customizable.

Stefan Feld City Collection- August 14th

Fans of Stefan Feld, who’s known for dozens of amazing board games like The Castles of Burgundy or Trajan, are in for a treat. This month we’ll witness not one but two of his super popular games coming back to Kickstarter in all new shape and with plenty of fresh additions

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is the first title set to debut on August 14th. The game is based on Macao by Feld, but the action of the new version takes place 5744 miles away from that city – in the capital of Netherlands.

What does Amsterdam bring to the table apart from the new setting? The cards got rebalanced and the main deck is now divided into two separate ones. Many changes were also made in the gameplay department. In Amsterdam players (2-4) become merchants and have to get their hands on valuable goods that come in 9 different varieties, create trade routes and control ferries carrying your valuables.

Hamburg

Hamburg. Trademarks and visuals belong to their rightful owners.

Hamburg is designed for 2 to 5 players and reimplements another game called Bruges. Cards are the key component and each of them can be used in 5 different ways: building walls, constructing buildings, activating boats and more

Instead of merchants, all players become mayors of the titular city. Each of you can chase different goals as many of them award points vital for winning. Protecting the city from random threats resulting from dice rolls is also important as ignoring them leads to painful penalties. The game includes 2 expansions released for the original Bruges as well as a healthy dose of gameplay tweaks.
