The Way of Kings Prime is here!

Creatives rarely work completely linearly. Especially early on in careers, you tend to get stories that have baked in the heads of authors for many years. Sometimes decades. And sometimes authors make multiple goes at a specific project. This was the case for Brandon Sanderson and The Way of Kings. This epic novel currently acts as the initial entry in The Stormlight Archive. But the version we ended up with is actually much different from the original one Brandon Sanderson did nearly two decades ago.

Sanderson himself has actually spoken about this take on The Way of Kings many times, but I never expected we’d see it. As it turns out though, we will be seeing this story in the form of The Way of Kings Prime. In fact, it’s available for you to read in PDF and ebook formats RIGHT NOW! “This is the version of The Way of Kings that I wrote in 2002,” Sanderson explained in the Way of Kings leatherbound edition Kickstarter video. “It is a completely different book. It’s not an early draft. It is me exploring Roshar and the world and characters in a direction that goes very differently from the book that you’ve read. Imagine it like an alternate universe “what-if” version of The Way of Kings.”

They were originally going to slate The Way of Kings Prime as a stretch goal for the Kickstarter. However, in light of the pandemic, Sanderson opted to release it for free. That’s a pretty sweet deal, if you ask me. However, if you’d like a physical version of the novel, you’ll need to pony up some extra cash.

The lowest tier on his Kickstarter that comes with a Way of Kings Prime Kickstarter hardcover is $250. Of course, it comes with a ton of goodies, including a poster, the leatherbound book, and a hardcover Stormlight novella. So it’s not like you wouldn’t be getting your money’s worth there.
