For most folks, it's hard to imagine what outer space looks and feels like — let alone what it might smell like. But with a new NASA-designed fragranced called Eau de Space on the horizon, we may soon find out. According to a Kickstarter that was recently launched for the scent, NASA created the formula decades ago as a way to train and prepare astronauts for how outer space actually smells. Now, its goal is to share it with the rest of the world.

As CNN reports, NASA first tapped chemist and founder of Omega Ingredients, Steve Pearce, to develop the fragrance in 2008. From there, it took him a full four years to get it right. Now, as the product manager for Eau de Space, Matt Richmond, explains on its Kickstarter, the brand is looking for people's help to mass manufacturer the fragrance so that everyone can experience the unique scent for themselves.

Speaking of which: If you're a fan of smoky fragrances with a hint of sweetness, Eau de Space might just be your jam. In regards to scent specifics, Richmond told CNN, "Astronauts describe the smell as a mix of gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries, and rum." He also admitted that it's one of those scents that can be notoriously difficult to describe.

In addition to wanting to get the innovative fragrance into the hands of the masses, the company is also hoping that its launch will lead to an increased interested in STEM for students grades K-12.

On the Kickstarter, it states: "We've partnered with the best perfumers in the world and secured the rights to launch this product exclusively. Our team consists of top Fashion, Tech, Design, and Logistics experience — all with a desire to increase STEM through experiential education. Eau de Space is our first avenue we are exploring."

As if all of this wasn't exciting enough, the company also has a sister scent called Smell of the Moon in the works, according to CNN.

Eau de Space currently has over $43,000 donations on Kickstarter and nearly 2,000 backers. It's set to retail for $15 with an estimated delivery date of October 2020.
