Moon filmmaker Duncan Jones and Eisner-nominated artist graphic novelist Alex de Campi have launched a Kickstarter for their new comic, Madi: Once Upon a Time in the Future – and before it went live on Tuesday morning, the project was already fully funded. Jones has paid for the comic’s creation in full himself, and it’s already nearly completed thanks to help from publisher Z2 Comics.

In the launch-video, Jones says that backers should think of this campaign as a storefront. Instead, the $50,000 goal will go towards making hardback and slipcase editions, an exclusive Q&A with himself and de Campi. Plus, as more funds are raised (it reached the $50,000 goal in less than an hour), artists’ royalties and page rates will go up, too. As Jones says, it’s a rare scenario, and one he’s proud to be a part of.

Madi: Once Upon a Time in the Future is written by Jones and de Campi with art from industry superstars including Glenn Fabry, Pia Guerra, Simon Bisley, Annie Wu, Duncan Fegredo and more, with each handling a section between 8-30 pages. Although the 260-page sci-fi graphic novel takes place in Jones’ Moon and Mute universe, it stands alone as its own story while also wrapping up the story of the “Mooniverse” through an anthology of independent stories.

Here’s the full lineup of line artists: Dylan Teague, Glenn Fabry, Duncan Fegredo, LRNZ, Ed Ocaña, André Araújo, Simon Bisley, Rosemary Valero-O’Connell, Tonci Zonjic, Pia Guerra, James Stokoe, RM Guéra, Chris Weston,  Rufus Dayglo, Annie Wu, David Lopez and Christian Ward.

And colorists: Matt Wilson, Nayoung Kim, Chris O’Halloran, Adam Brown, Jacob Phillips, Raúl Arnaiz, Giulia Brusco, Sergey Nazarov and Kelly Fitzpatrick.

Aside from his work on the BAFTA award-winning Moon, Jones is also working on film adaptation of 2000 AD’s Rogue Trooper, and just a year ago, announced a talent search for three comic artists to turn Moon into a comic. De Campi, meanwhile, recently launched her new Panel Syndicate series Bad Karma with Ryan Howe and Dee Cunniffe, and is also looking forward to her new Image series with Erica Henderson, Dracula Motherf**ker!.
