polish startup mudita has launched a mobile phone that ‘aims to improve your wellbeing’ by replacing the modern-day smartphone. the pebble gray phone features a sleek, minimal design, and a 2.84inch e-ink screen for eye-friendly reading — like that found on a kindle.

the screen provides a natural, analog feel that puts less strain on the eyes and is readable, even in the strongest sunlight. perhaps most importantly however is that the phone has no internet connectivity, limiting its functions to calls, texts, notes, a calendar, calculator, alarm clock, torch, voice recorder, and a music player.

it’s a basic device that aims to support a healthy relationship between the user and their phone, not only mentally but physically too. the mudita pure is fitted with a special antenna that minimizes exposure to harmful radio frequencies, while maintaining good reception. it also features a customized front light with a temperature of approximately 3800k, limiting exposure to blue light, which is essential to maintain uninterrupted and healthy sleep patterns.

it still maintains some of the ‘less damaging’ features of a smartphone though, like the music player so that users can listen to music or audiobooks, through a powerful 1W harman loudspeaker no less, which mudita says provides high quality and natural sound. the battery is estimated to last up to two weeks, which means no more daily charging so users can finally forget to think about their phone.

‘at mudita, we believe that great things happen when we’re fully present,’ says mudita founder michal kicinski. ‘as tech giants and brands aim to fill our lives with more technology and limit our privacy, encouraging people to share and live their life through their devices and platforms, mudita wants to do the opposite.’

‘our mission is to take away the pressures of social media and our always-online attitude through education and the stripping back of unnecessary tech elements of everyday products to focus on living our lives offline,’ he adds. ‘we want to help people build a more balanced and healthier relationship with technology.’

‘every day we are overloaded with information – it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find inner peace. we believe that mudita pure can also be used as a second phone to help us unplug during evenings, weekends or holidays in order to spend quality time with our loved ones or enjoying solitude.’

mudita has launched a kickstarter for the mudita pure phone, starting from $221 USD (super early bird price). it has so far surpassed $100,000, reaching its funding goal within the first hour.
