Twelfth Planet Press launches ‘inclusive’ new imprint for pre-teens

Independent genre publisher Twelfth Planet Press has launched a new imprint for pre-teen readers.

The Titania imprint will specialise in ‘diverse stories for children in the 3–13 age range, with the aim to reflect the diversity of sexuality, race, gender, ethnicity and religion that we see in the world’.

The first book to published under the new imprint will be the middle-grade illustrated fiction title Winter’s Tale, written by Nike Sulway and illustrated by Shauna O’Meara. The book follows a non-binary foster child who encounters several families that challenge the notion of the traditional nuclear family unit, and will be funded through a Kickstarter campaign. The small publisher has previously used crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Pozible to raise funds for new titles.

Winter’s Tale is especially dear to our hearts because we believe it’s so important to provide books for non-binary, agender and gender questioning young people who deserve to see characters like themselves in media,’ said publisher Alisa Krasnostein. ‘We also believe it’s important for cisgender children to read about characters who are not like them, as this can help build empathy and raise questions that are relevant to current society.’

Winter’s Tale will be released in October.
