Nightdive Studios has been remastering and re-releasing classic titles since 2013. System Shock 2 was one of the first games the publisher re-released. In 2015, it also managed to remaster the original System Shock in an Enhanced Edition. Other major games remastered or re-released include Strife, Forsaken, Blood, Wizardry 6-8, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, Darklands, BloodNet, and dozens of minor releases. It’s an impressive back catalog of classics. Yesterday, Nightdive announced on Twitter that an Enhanced Edition of System Shock 2 is in development and coming soon.

System Shock 2 mods
System Shock 2 has a very diverse and popular modding scene, both on the Nexus and ModDB. However, as with a lot of moddable games, it can be rather tiresome to mod and customize it properly. This modding guide is fairly straightforward and easy to follow, but the fact that you have to follow a guide or a video to mod it might turn off quite a few players. So it’s possible that Nightdive is working on a more self-contained edition that comes pre-modded with graphic enhancements and whatever else would help offer a better experience for new and old players.
Let’s not forget that Nightdive Studios is also developing a full-on remake of System Shock on the Unreal Engine 4. The studio released a demo and an alpha gameplay video back in 2016, and the remake was crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Although the project hit a bump last year, the latest updates on Kickstarter suggest that it’s back on track. It looks like 2020 will be a big year for the System Shock franchise if Nightdive releases both the remake and the Enhanced Edition of System Shock 2. And then there’s System Shock 3 in development by OtherSide Entertainment, which was first announced back in 2015. The studio showed a teaser earlier this year. So there’s definitely a lot of System Shock coming in the near future.
