Kickstarter to bring TY the Tasmanian Tiger to Switch has kicked-off

The cult favourite TY the Tasmanian Tiger could be heading to the Switch. That’s if the new Kickstarter campaign started today gets off the ground.

TY the Tasmanian Tiger was developed by Krome Studios and released all the way back in 2002, now after a successful early-access launch on Steam, the Krome crew want to bring Ty to the Switch.

There’s a slew of interesting potential rewards for backers, ranging from just having your name in the credits or getting a copy of the game when it launches, all the way up to a crazy $700+ pledge, which will net you what’s called “Dennis’ Enormous Thunder Egg Collection.” This’ll net you a digital copy for both Switch and Steam, digital versions of the soundtrack and art book, physical copies of both the soundtrack and the artbook, a necklace, a mug, a pair of board shorts, and a picture of you, drawn as a TY universe animal, amongst other things.

The funding goal is set at $50,000 USD, which is just short of $75,000 AUD — not a small amount of money, but not unreasonable either. Should it reach its goal, here’s what Krome will do to bring the game to Switch:

  • Joycon 6-axis motion control for throwing the rangs, gliding and precision boomeranging!
  • Screen-space ambient occlusion
  • Fully dynamic shadows
  • Color correction and bloom
  • High definition (HD) art textures for the levels and characters
  • Improved particle effects
  • Improved camera
  • New Gamemode called “Hardcore Mode”
  • QA testing and problem fixing
  • Nintendo Lot Check
  • New TY character skins (a stretch goal feature)
  • Compatible with both the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite*  (*requires extra controllers to be able to use the TY motion controls.  i.e. throwing and gliding.)

That last point is a little curious, as it sounds like the motion control is primarily gyro aiming (update: there will be motion gestures as well, see statement below), a feature that — as far as we’re aware — should be available on the Switch Lite. We’ve reached out to Krome Studios for clarification.

Update: We’ve heard back from Krome Studios, who’ve given us the following statement:

The intent is that there will be both a motion gesture control system; as well as a non-motion gesture system (button press), so everybody is covered depending on how they want to play.

The company says they’ll be making that clearer in the campaign.

As with all Kickstarters, backing it doesn’t mean you’ll get the end product and it could take a long time for it to eventuate.

The original games have had EA and Activision as publishers! You would think that such an IP would be able to get the necessary funding for something like this.

Either way, I’m really tempted to part with US$5 just to get my name in the credits even though I have no interest in the game. 😛
