Roll Player: Fiends & Familiars – Next Expansion Ready on Kickstarter

Roll Player is a great dice game where you create your character by giving him a set of proper skills, feats, weapons and armor. The original game ended just, when some expected it to start getting interesting: right after the character creation. The Monsters & Minions expansion allowed us to hunt the titular beasts, but Fiends & Familiars will open even more possibilities.

What’s New

The Fiends & Familiars expansion will add a plenty of friendly and unfriendly creatures to the game.

The friendly “familiars” are helpful and appear as mini boards attached to the hero’s board. They require 3 dice, and getting ones with matching colours and values will grant additional points. They also have their own abilities that you can use while playing.

The nasty “fiends” – the second big (and titular) addition to the expansion are the real scourge of the kingdom. They appear on a brand new initiative cards and attach to our hero, when he’s taking dice from a card where they reside. In Fiends & Familiars expansion, instead of drawing/rolling and placing a die on cards we use 2 dice instead of 1.

Each of the annoying fiends has its own gimmick, that makes gaining your glory harder. Examples? Weapon may broke down or you can get into a state where each finished attribute row forces you to take a damage token. The only way to get rid of these  penalties is spending 5 coins or discarding a charisma token.

Any other new additions? How about the two-colour dice. Their value stays between 1 and 4, but they count as two colours, and this comboes well with many mechanics of the game.

All of the above adds plenty of variety and new mechanics to the well-known Roll Player. The box will obviously include much more than that: new monster cards, class cards, market cards etc. There are over 170 cards inside, a set of 50 tokens , 40 experience dice, 15 new dice and 25 combat dice. Pretty neat for an expansion, right?

The Big Box

Another thing, that may interest many Roll Player fans is the possibility to buy Fiends & Familiars in a huge box, that can fit the core game along its two expansions. The illustration on the box looks like a decorated treasure chest, which makes the whole package even more tempting.

Keith Matejka, the creator of Roll Player, isn’t expecting any further game expansions, so no need to worry about Bix Box ever being too small. It can even fit all of the cards sleeved.
