British startup Roli has launched a series of inventive musical instruments. Its latest has been unveiled with a Kickstarter pre-orders campaign.
The instrument is called Lumi, which is pitched as “the illuminated keyboard, app and song library that lets you play great songs and learn as you go”. You might compare it to music game Guitar Hero (or perhaps more relevantly, Smule’s music app Magic Piano) in the way it guides people to play songs by following a system of lights.
“Lumi is for anyone who ever wanted to play an instrument. It’s also for people who want to revive forgotten piano skills, and it’s even for musicians who want a fun, portable way to play,” suggests the Kickstarter pitch.
The device is due to ship in October, with £147 the minimum price to secure one. Nearly 2,500 people at the time of writing have already stumped up, the day after the campaign launched.
The most interesting thing here for Music Ally readers may be that ‘song library’ aspect: Roli has licensed a catalogue of songs which can be played with their melody, chords or bassline. It’s a positive step on for Roli in terms of its licensing relationships with rightsholders, for sure.
