Kickstart some art: Cool projects that need cash

Whitney Matheson, USA TODAY

Are you crazy for crowd-funding? Then you may enjoy our series that highlights independent art projects (many of them on Kickstarter) that need a little cash.

Here's an example of 'Bacteriography,' which is looking for funding on Kickstarter.

Several projects from our last installment have been funded, while others are still in need and offering great incentives to donate. Peruse them with an open mind and an open wallet; I still hope the Chesstache and Ashes come to fruition!

Here are a few newer projects I have my eye on:

1. Bacteriography: Photographs Grown in Bacteria. A "bioartist" somehow utilizes bacteria to create portraits of Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and others. A $35 pledge gets you a custom-designed bottle of hand sanitizer.

2. Pretentious Record Store Guy. I'd like to read this comic about "a guy who works in a record store, goes to all of the coolest shows, and knows about all the new, up-and-coming bands before you do." Creator Carlos Gabriel Ruiz has raised about $3,000 of his $5,000 goal.

3. Testify: A Visual Love Letter to Appalachia. Raleigh-based artist Roger May is trying to get his book of photos published. Those fascinated with Appalachian culture may want to help him out.

4. The Dragon Book and Other Stories. Michael Regina collaborated with his 4-year-old daughter on this storybook, which he hopes to donate to hospitals and libraries.

5. A Night at the Sorrento and Other Stories. Longtime Pop Candy reader/cartoonist Henry Chamberlain has launched a Kickstarter for a collection of his work. Just $20 gets you a copy, but he's still pretty short of his $3,250 goal.

6. Reading Frenzy Relaunch. The Portland, Ore., shop sold a wealth of independent publications, 'zines and the like. Sadly, it had to close its doors last year, but this effort may help bring it back!

7. My Stupid Raygun. This comics/art anthology appears to be chock full of artists I need to know. (Also, if you scroll down the page, one of the contributors is sporting an amazing pair of Cookie Monster pants.) So far only $910 of the $3,800 goal has been met.

8. The Liddup Cooler. OK, so a $100,000 goal is pretty steep. But seriously, how come no one has invented a light-up cooler yet?
