Yooka-Laylee is the result of a Kickstarter campaign that aimed to give players a similar experience to the classic
Banjo-Kazooie, released for the Nintendo 64 back in 1998, as the proper spiritual successor to Rare's beloved 3d platformer series.
The game was developed by Playtonic, which is an independent developer based in England that was formed by Rare.Ltd veterans who had worked on several projects for the company now owned by Microsoft; including the
Banjo-Kazooie series.
Yooka-Laylee was finally released in 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC; giving players a game that brings together all of the best elements from the
Banjo-Kazooie titles.
The game's main charactes, Yooka and Laylee, have even made an appearance on the indie party fighting game
Brawlout and, if the Kickstarter campaign is a success, will soon be getting a sequel in the form of a 120-page comicbook.
Recently, Playtonic has hit a new milestone as they shared on Twitter the news that over 1 million players have already played
Yooka-Laylee. The tweet doesn't provide any additional information, but it is likely that they are considering digital and physical sales. Whatever the case, it is great news for the studio and the fans who have supported the game since the Kickstarter campaign was announced.
