Have you ever wondered if the world around you might not be real? That everyone you know may be part of one big simulation and even if you escaped, it might turn out you were just in another even more complex reproduction. Sci-fi films like the Matrix and Inception have dealt with this existential crisis for decades, and we are not exactly unfamiliar with the concept.

And it is this very question that you’ll be faced with in this potential new board game; Simulation Theory, planned to be pitched on Kickstarter at the beginning of August.

From the creators of MegaCorp, Simulation theory is a 1-5 player board game that transports its players into one of three different realities:

The Stone (epic fantasy) - A group of champions receive a dream from the ancients. It is up to them to find ‘the stone’, a millennia old artefact of God-like power before it falls into the hands of a tyrannical warlord, a demon in man’s flesh.

The Prison (Cyberpunk) - In a supermax security prison, inmates are subject to time dilation reality simulators for inhuman brain research. A group of prisoner’s wake up from these simulations and see the horrors going on around them. The first thing on their minds is how to escape.

The Ark (Space Travel) - After an accident on the Genesis Ark, the last hope of humanity, the ship’s colonists are put into stasis through the use of a virtual universe. Worse yet the simulation has been altered to purge 90% of the colonists with only the strongest surviving. Some of the colonists however manage to awaken from the simulation, it’s up to them the repair the ship and save the last of humanity.

Of course, it’s possible that none of these worlds could actually be real. With 5 unique playable characters per reality (and the potential for a 6th through stretch goals) it’ll be up for you to decide between simulation or reality.

The game will feature three modes of play. The standard classic mode, challenge mode for more experiences players and the stretch goal of an adventure mode. This is a choose your own adventure mode were each character’s backstory will have a major outcome on how the game progresses.

The game takes place on a 5x4 grid (5x5 for adventure mode) where players will compete to rise through the different layers of simulation and brake free to reality. Every turn, each player will choose one coordinate to influence and will have to compete and challenge other players you explore further into the simulation. Players will use four unique components (IQ, EQ, MQ and BQ) to gain the upper hand on their rivals.

When a player has broken out of all available realities, the game will end and the player who has collected the most ‘victory points’ from the challenges with be declared the winner.

Other notable projects coming from Kickstarter include a card game based on The Binding of Issac as well as an open world rouguelike RPG; Stoneshard. For more similar news, stay tuned to IGN Southeast Asia.
