A new Kickstarter-funded cookbook project — “Edible Games,” by West Coast-based Jenn Sandercock — brings new meaning to the term, “playing with your food.”

Five years ago, the Seattle video game designer and avid baker began making edible, real-world board games people could play — and nibble — at festivals, conventions and galleries. Her chess-inspired Order of the Oven Mitt, for example, even won an IndieCade Interaction Award in 2016.

Of course, these games were one-offs. You had to be there to enjoy the game play, and once a game had been played it was, well, in the bellies of the players. So Sandercock decided to write a game and cookbook hybrid that allows home bakers to create their own games, turning the standard checkerboard concept, for example, into a gingerbread expanse of marshmallow castles and candy-topped game pieces. (And yes, of course, there are gluten-free and vegan options. It’s 2018, people.)

The book, which Sandercock hopes to publish next year, also includes a Patisserie Code game involving cream puffs, Flavour Roulette and — our fave — a cookie version of Tetris. That piece doesn’t fit? Nibble, nibble — it does now!
