These minimalist 3D city maps are made of wood

Millennial pink, ‘grammable interiors, and wooden city maps? The latest design craze to hit the internet may be sweet, satisfying maps made of laser-cut layers. There were these intricate and delicate cut-paper maps, a gorgeous wooden variety representing lake topography, and now, incredible 3D wooden city maps from CityWood.

After launching a small Kickstarter campaign in late January, the company has raised more than 22 times its original goal with over a week to spare. Each of the company’s maps show detailed layers of waterways and city streets in thin sheets of high-quality plywood and are laser cut with one-hundredth-of-a-millimeter precision. Then they’re sanded and finished with a varnish.

Each map is assembled by hand and comes frames with wood and a plexiglass front. They range in size from 5-by-7 inches to 36-by-36 inches, with the smallest option starting at a Kickstarter price of $29. The maps made for the campaign are expected to ship in May 2018.

CityWood currently has dozens of cities in the U.S. and abroad in its repertoire and is taking requests for next available cities.
