Simon Stålenhag’s artwork is well-known for its blending of 1980s suburbia with the fantastic. Giant robots roam the empty countrysides of Sweden, while sleek buildings loom in the distance. It’s the perfect environment in which to channel something like Stranger Things, and a new role-playing game utilizing Stålenhag’s art will let you reenact your own version of the Netflix show.

Tales from the Loop is an RPG currently funding on Kickstarter, and it’s already met its goal, raising just shy of $150,000 with two weeks to go. Stålenhag’s art is the central focus as players play a group of teenagers in the late 1980s, after a Swedish particle accelerator known as the Loop malfunctioned and caused some strange things to happen in their backyard. If you loved Stranger Things, and wanted to play your own version, Stålenhag’s artwork feels like it’s drawing on many of the same influences and desire for nostalgia.

The game is expected to ship in February, but backers will be able to get a PDF of the beta version before Christmas. The game appears to be largely completed at this point: it was a stretch goal for the original Kickstarter run by Stålenhag to fund his first art book, Tales from the Loop. $20 (or SEK 200) will get you a PDF, while $37.73 will get you the printed version.
