If Nintendo Won't Make A New Advance Wars, These Guys Will

Since developers Intelligent Systems are too busy these days on Fire Emblem (and other stuff) to make any more of their brilliant Advance Wars games, a team of Japanese developers have decided to do their work for them, announcing a new PC title that is Advance Wars in everything but name.

Tiny Metal, billed as a “spirtual successor” to the Advance Wars series (which hasn’t seen a new release since 2008), is being worked on by guys like writer Hiro Inaba (I Am Setsuna, Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright) and Secret of Mana composer Hiroki Kikuta (who, weirdly, is not composing ,but instead acting as “scenario supervisor”).

It’s...well, it’s Advance Wars. The cute design, the square tiles, the turn-based combat, the rock-paper-scissors strategy, the cute character art, the branching narrative campaign, the works.

The differences here are that the presentation is a little slicker, and that it’s for the PC, and not a Nintendo handheld.

There’s a playable build available here that, while still pretty rough, gives you a good idea of where they’re going with the game. And if you like where they’re going, there’s a Kickstarter for the project here.
