Women Take Center Stage: Making a 100% Female Film
The statistics about women in film, both in front of and behind the camera, are pretty depressing.
While the Ghostbusters reboot and films like the just-released Equity help to raise the visibility of women in the entertainment industry and spark discussion about the importance of equal representation, we still have a long way to go.
A year ago, one of my best friends and I decided we wanted to turn her play (To the New Girl: Sound Advice for My Former Husband’s Wife or Mistress by Samantha Macher) into a feature film. The play is a series of powerful monologues for women, which the Los Angeles Times called “a bracing blitz of pure estrogen.”
Samantha and I are both women in the entertainment industry, and as such are quite familiar with the issues facing young women who follow this career path. I am also the assistant editor-in-chief of a popular website, Ms. in the Biz, that focuses on women in all areas of the entertainment industry. The concerns of artistic women who are trying to pave their way in a male-dominated industry are very important to us. Because of this we wanted to ensure that this movie would provide a group of up-and-coming talented women with an opportunity to showcase their skills.
We realized that we could make a powerful statement by using only women to create this movie.
We’ve built a wonderful team of 10 actresses, 10 directors (who will each direct one monologue), and a crew full of awesome ladies.
We’re running a Kickstarter that ends on August 9th, 2016 that is currently unfortunately running well behind in pledges. We need a LOT of help in the next seven days if we’re going to have a shot at bringing this project to life. (UPDATE: We successfully completed our Kickstarter campaign, and are shooting in March 2017. You can still support our film & get fun rewards here: www.bit.ly/TTNGsupport! Thank you!)
