Local
Author and small business owner, Kimber Grey, is reaching out to her community
to help her help a handful of writers world-wide. Kimber is encouraging
science-fiction and fantasy readers to pre-order her small press' newest
anthology about time travel. Her one simple goal: to pay the writers their due.
The trouble is, she only has until 10:00 am on June 8th to accomplish this goal,
or the anthology will never see the light of day.
The
small press GrayWhisper Graphics Productions(GWGP) is not a stranger to
crowdfunding; in 2012, a Kickstarter campaign funded the first print-run of
Kimber's second fantasy novel, Seeking
Destiny. When Kimber decided to assemble a cast of authors for her newest
project, she swore to herself and her contributors that she would not be
another non-paying publisher. So, she turned to Kickstarter once more. She
thought: "what better way to raise the funds for the writers' well-earned
dues than by selling pre-orders of their work?"
Singular Irregularity - Time Travel Gone
Terribly Wrong is everything you
would expect, and more. An anthology with the slogan "It's only time
travel; what could go wrong?", it promises to bring an eclectic array of
stories ranging from witty and whimsical to dark and dire. It offers readers
the expected 'impending Armageddon' and 'alien invaders', but also provides the
unexpected: disappearing cups of tea and killer robot bunnies from the future.
One really surprising aspect of this publication is
how involved the contributing authors have been in the funding process. They've
offered up critiques for novice writers, copies of their other books, and even several
sought-after Tuckerization privileges (giving the customers an opportunity to
have their name appear in one of the stories of the anthology).
Everyone
involved is excited about the project, and eager to see the collection in
print. As of May 31st, crowdfunding enthusiasts had pre-ordered incentive
packages to the tune of $2,100, two thirds the minimum needed for the first
print run and the authors' pay. Singular
Irregularity only needs $3,500 become a reality, and every benchmark above
that one increases the authors' pay. Kimber's ultimate goal: to pay the
talented writers of this exciting collection what they deserve, a pro-market
rate of $0.06 per word.
