'Torment: Tides Of Numenera' Doubles Its Kickstarter Goal

'Torment: Tides of Numenera' raises nearly $2 million in less than two days on Kickstarter.

Oh Kickstarter, how would we embrace our love of retro RPGs without you?

Between Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, and now Torment: Tides of Numenera (just to name a small handful) the crowd-funding site seems particularly suited to appeal to that old-school nostalgia. Even a game like Star Citizen, which is quite new in many ways still appealed to the old-school gamer in all of us.

So the Planescape spiritual successor raced its way past $1.5 million in just one day, hitting its funding goal in just six hours. Today it's already doubled its $900,000 goal---it's currently at $1,801,655, though it will be above that by the time I publish this post.

Now inXile, the game developer behind Torment and the previously Kickstarter-funded Wastelands 2, has released stretch goals.

New writers, deeper story, a Planescape retrospective documentary with many of its core team involved---all of this was achieved by the time they'd even published stretch goals, which presents an odd twist to the concept of stretch goals.

Monte Cook, the tabletop game designer whose Numenera game serves as the core of the new Torment CRPG, will join as a writer on the project at $2 million, along with more music and a new companion character. This is basically a foregone conclusion at this point, with the $2 million mark looming ever closer.

To top all that off, inXile is opening up PayPal as a secondary donation option, a tactic that's been quite successful for other crowd-funding projects.

Of course, I've heard some people talking about how they're simply tapped out. They've already pledged to X number of projects and no matter how good this or that new Kickstarter sounds, they just don't have the funds to keep backing games that they won't play for another year or two. I keep thinking we may be reaching some sort of critical mass, some massive surprise burn-out where a project like this finds itself struggling.

You see projects fail---pretty cool looking projects that manage their campaign well---but so far the willingness to back especially games helmed by tried-and-true veterans of the RPG business is still strong.
