Friday The 13th Multiplayer Game Takes To Kickstarter

Jason Vorhees has been through a lot these past few decades. Making his debut in what is widely considered the godfather of teen slasher flicks, he’s gone on to star in whole host of sequels, chopping his way through generation after generation of camp-faring miscreants. Hell, he’s been blasted into space and has even thrown down with the king of nightmares himself, Freddy Krueger.

When it comes to video games, however, Jason’s had a fairly tough break. Bar his recent appearance as a downloadable character in Mortal Kombat X, his only other claim to fame is starring in 1985’s Friday The 13th for Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, and the Speccy. Aside from being one of the worst games ever made, hardware limitations at the time made it impossible for the developer to achieve what they were no doubt aiming for.

Now, more than thirty years after his retro gaming train wreck, Jason is back and could be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in a new multiplayer-focused title.

Developed by Gun Media, the game will enable eight players to tackle a series of scenarios which all take place within the iconic grounds of Camp Crystal Lake.

Seven of these will assume the role of counsellors, taking on one of the various teen horror archetypes. From jock to nerd and the familiar shades in between, each is characterised by a set of skills, strengths, and weaknesses.

The remaining player, of course, will don that unmistkable mask and machette combo, attempting to foil the counsellors’ escape plan.

With no gameplay being shown, it’s hard to imagine just how exactly each game will play out. Gun Media, who have been working closely with series’ creator Sean S. Cunningham, have assured prospective players that each scenario will be both balanced and fun.

None of this will matter, however, if the project isn’t backed first. Taking to Kickstarter today, the developer is asking backers for $700,000 and have already lined up a list of stretch goals. As for rewards, you can reserve yourself a copy of the finished product for $30 – $25 if you’re one of the 2,500 earlybirds.

Although Friday The 13th seems to be in very capable hands, its success isn’t one hundred percent guaranteed. Over the past few years we’ve seen plenty of crowd-funded games go under.

Hopefully that won’t be the case here. Within hours of launching, the Kickstarter campaign is already sitting on a comfortable $70,000 with over a thousand backers.

Some of you out there will no doubt be experiencing some kind of deja vu. It wasn’t that long ago when Last Year – a five versus one multiplayer horror game – was also announced, carrying the exact same premise.

  1. Could you not do the “Press X to Jason Vorhees” joke the rest of the internet seems to have managed?

    • Damn, didn’t even think of that!

  2. The advent of vhs initially led to a decline in cinema attendance so cinemas employed a variety of ‘novel’ approaches to get bums on the seats.
Back in 1986 my local cinema thought it would be a good idea to do a Friday 13th all nighter on Friday 13th and my friends and I thought it would be a good idea to see films 1 through to 6 in one sitting.

We were wrong. We couldn’t leave though cos there were no buses home till the next morning so we had to sit through it all.

I’ve hated all things Friday 13th ever since.
