Nextbit, a mobile developer that was created by former Google, Apple, Amazon, and HTC employees, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter for its new Android smartphone, Robin.

Robin 2The company announced:

“We’re Nextbit. We made a smartphone that brings the power of the cloud to everyone with an integrated cloud OS. We made it because we’re tired of waiting on others. Because we believe in a cloud-first future. And because no one else was making the phone we wanted. This is the phone we want, and we think you’ll want it too. Smarter. Powerful. Bold. And, direct to you. Now we need your help. Back us to help make next a reality now.”

Notably Robin has the cloud integrated right into Android OS, and its tuned hardware is optimized to take every advantage of it. While sharing details about the phone’s storage Nextbit explained:

“Robin intelligently adapts to your storage needs, and automatically optimizes the space on your phone when it sees you need it. By learning the apps you use and the space you need, Robin offloads the stuff you don’t use to the cloud. So you can have everything you want (in the cloud), and just what you need (on your phone).

Robin 4“Robin backs up your apps and photos whenever you’re connected to power and Wi-Fi. (These are the default setting to conserve power and data, but you can change them to fit your needs.) After you’ve been using it for a while and start running out of space, Robin intelligently removes apps and photos you haven’t used in a while – even if you’re offline. Robin knows they’re already backed up safely. If you ever want an offloaded app or photo back, no problem. Just tap on it and we restore the full version right away. It’s hassle free, the way everything should be.”

While discussing Robin’s sleek and different design, the company stated that the phone is designed for people who “are tired of the status quo and crave something with more personality.” It supposedly reduces clutter and increases usability.

“The placement of everything is arranged so every port, button and sensor feels harmonious, symmetrical, and makes sense.”

Robin 1Besides being created by some of pros in the smartphone business, the smartphone is efficient (long battery life), has a 13MP with phase detection autofocus, dual tone flash camera, fingerprint sensor, dual front facing stereo speakers, 3GB RAM / 32 GB onboard / 100 GB online, and 5.2” IPS LCD 1080p, Gorilla Glass 4.

During a recent interview with CNET, co-founder and CEO of Nextbit,Tom Moss, noted:

“We poured our hearts and souls into this project, but because we kept everything under wraps, we really had no idea what the public reaction would be like.”

While discussing the Kickstarter campaign’s popularity, Moss added:

“This shows that customers really believe that more is possible with the cloud, and they’re ready for a change. And they’re ready to buy phones in a new way.”

Robin is set to be shipped to Kickstarter backer in winter 2016. Since its launch the campaign has successfully surpassed its initial $500,000 and is now at over $800,000 thanks to 2100 backers. It is set to close on October 1st.
