[dropcap size=big]T[/dropcap]he ongoing saga of Dreamfall Chapters continues in the third book, Realms, as we continue to unravel the mysteries surrounding Zoe Castillo and Kian Alvane. Some of the burning questions left unanswered in the second book start to unravel and become apparent while more questions are added on top of what we still don’t know. The first two books have already been reviewed, and you can check out our previous coverage on the game. A word of warning before you continue, though. This review might contain some minor spoilers.

Dreamfall Chapters

Depending on the choices you made previously in Dreamfall Chapters events can transpire quite differently from game to game. We’ve already seen some of the repercussions from decisions made early on and they continue to haunt our protagonists throughout Realms. For instance, if you’re like me and pissed off Likho he’ll be more likely to not be around you throughout Kian’s journey. Likewise you’ll see more, or less, of other NPCs based on what you’ve done before and they’ll react to you differently as you continue your journey. The best part about this is that you’re constantly being shown the consequences, for better or worse, than it would be for a static universe.

Dreamfall Chapters

Book three continues where the second one left off. In Marcuria Kian is still working for the rebels as they work to dislodge the Azadi from the town. Old Town, the “Magicals” quarter, has been razed and closed off to anyone without permission and it’s pretty much a human only town now. As you walk around you notice that the pipeline is pretty much finished and as Kian investigates the nature of the setup he’s confronted with the truth. That it’s all part of a machine to capture dreams. For what purpose we don’t really find out and it leaves more questions than answers.

Dreamfall Chapters

Back in Europolis Zoe has to deal with the consequences of giving sensitive information to one of two parties. Depending on who you gave the data to at the end of book two in Dreamfall Chapters you’ll find that the city is under lockdown by the EYE. Considering that there are conspiracies, bombings, and cover ups all over the place it comes as to no surprise that martial law has been erected. The truth to what’s been happening starts to unravel and it’s up to her to try to sort out the mess. Even going so far as to finally using a Dreammachine. I won’t spoil much more than that.

Dreamfall Chapters

Dreamfall Chapters book three is a bit on the short side, particularly compared to the second episode, but it does cover a lot of ground. The best part, though, would have to be the return of a fan favorite character. If you played The Longest Journey or Dreamfall then you should recognize him immediately. Everyone’s favorite wise cracking feathered fowl Crow is back. He doesn’t have much screen time but he does steal the show. At least in my opinion. He’s always been one of my favorites.
