Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Kickstarter closes with $5.5M in crowdfunding

The Kickstarter campaign for Koji Igarashi's spiritual successor to his brand of Castlevania games, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, has come to a close with more than $5.5 million in pledges.

Nearly 65,000 backers kicked in money to help fund the development of Bloodstained, confirming its status as the most-funded video game software project on Kickstarter by a very comfortable margin.

In the final two days of Bloodstained's crowdfunding campaign, the game blew past a few more stretch goals. The scope of the project now includes a prequel mini-game for consoles, portables and PC platforms, as well as a roguelike dungeon and a new "boss revenge mode."

The Bloodstained Kickstarter campaign kicked off in May, seeking $500,000 to help fund development of the side-scrolling "Igavania" game. Igarashi is creating the game with developer Inti Creates, which also worked on Kickstarter success story, Mighty No. 9. Other chief creatives involved include musicians Michiru Yamane and Ippo Yamada; artists Ayami Kojima and Yoshitaka Amano; and voice actors David Hayter and Robbie Belgrade.

The developers plan to release their Castlevania-style game on consoles, portables and PC platforms in 2017.

Igarashi left Konami last year after more than 20 years at the company. For more on Iga, read Polygon's interview with the veteran developer from 2014 and our recent "day in the life" feature.
