serpent2I was raised on the classic cRPGs of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, games like Diablo and Baldur’s Gate, and while playing those games today still feels satisfying and fun, I can’t help but feel like the genre has been neglected. It didn’t update itself with the times, it just melded with other, faster-paced genres, and lost itself in action RPG and RTS mechanics. Serpent in the Staglands looks to bring back the original charm and deeply involving gameplay of those classic cRPGs while bringing in modern technology and good ideas to improve upon the system even further.

Serpent in the Staglands uses Baldur’s Gate-style combat, with every action’s success being decided by a dice roll. Also intact is the ability to pause combat whenever you need to, to strategize or get a grip on the situation. Serpent in the Staglands also features a unique art style, featuring detailed pixel art. Every piece of gear your character wears can make an impact on your appearance, and everything comes in several colors. The skill system is also very much worth noting. Serpent in the Staglands features a classless skill system with a massive number of skills to be used both in and out of combat.

Serpent in the Staglands is currently under development by Whalenaught Studios and is very close to meeting its $10,000 Kickstarter goal. If the goal is met, Serpent in the Staglands will release for PC, Mac, and Linux in a nice, DRM-free form. If you’re one of the next 32 people to pledge $15, you can reserve your copy now.
