'Yooka-Laylee' Kickstarter Becomes Fastest-Earning Video Game Campaign, Nears $2 Million Mark With 44 Days Left

Yooka-Laylee, a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie being developed by a team of former Rare employees--excited fans when its Kickstarter campaign was announced. That excitement has very quickly translated into dollars.

We knew the Kickstarter would be a hit quickly following its announcement--the campaign met its $270,000 goal just 40 minutes after going live. Reaching the goal didn't stop the influx of donations, though: Yooka-Laylee has now earned nearly $2 million at the time of writing.

That's good enough to become the fastest-earning gaming Kickstarter ever. That rate also meant the final stretch goal was reached in no time--donations soared up the stretch goal ladder to hit the last, £1,200,000 milestone easily. That has driven the developers at Playtonic to add another, £1,500,000 stretch goal for an orchestral score.

Accounting for currency translation, the donation total is already getting close to that new goal. There are, amazingly, 44 days left on the Kickstarter campaign--who knows how high the total could grow? In addition to specific milestones, Playtonic notes than any extra money helps them grow and polish the game "to the Nth degree".

The game is being developed by Rare alumni, but it of course does not have the Banjo-Kazooie liscence. Gone are the loveable bear and bird of the past, and in come new chameleon and bat heroes (Yooka and Laylee, get it?). You can see some early footage in action in the video below from the Kickstarter page, which includes developer comments about the team and the plan. The creatures possess abilities based on the capabilities of those two real animals, taking reality and spinning into a colorful game world.
