Starr Mazer fuses point-and-click adventure and retro shmups

Starr Mazer is a game rooted in retro gaming nostalgia. It's headed to Kickstarter this Thursday.

With a mix of old-school style point-and-click adventure games and side-scrolling space shooters, Starr Mazer tells the story of mercenary pilot Brick M. Stonewood.

Recently revived from a frozen sleep-lock, Stonewood finds himself thrust back into a galaxy "in shambles," following The Great War 130 years prior.

Behind Starr Mazer is Don Thacker, a game designer and filmmaker, and Alex Mauer, a music composer for games such as Serious Sam: The Random Encounter.

Contributing musicians for the Starr Mazer project include Manami Matsumae of Mega Man fame, Jake "virt" Kaufman (Shovel Knight), and Danimal Cannon.

In addition to classic games, Starr Mazer pulls its musical inspiration from several 80s cartoons, such as Silverhawks, Dinosaucers, and Transformers.

"We've started with a 16-bit sound palette using the TurboGrafx-16 as the base but are lifting the console restrictions to expand it into a full production synthesized soundtrack while retaining the classic feel," explains Mauer.

Backers of Starr Mazer's upcoming Kickstarter will receive a copy of the game for $15 USD, which is 25% off the planned retail cost.

Additional reward tiers come with the soundtrack, a 3D model of the protagonist's ship, and a physical boxed copy of the game.

Starr Mazer will be released for PC, Mac, and Linux, with additional platforms to be announced.
