Zach Braff thinks "too many cooks in the kitchen" can ruin a film.

The 39-year-old actor is back with his second big screen directorial offering, Wish I Was Here. He stars in the movie as Aidan Bloom, a man who must decide his future after finding himself at a major crossroads in life involving his career, family and friends.

Other big names in the feature include Kate Hudson and Ashley Greene, and Zach thought long and hard while choosing the stars to take on the roles.

"Casting is everything. The quickest way to make a good script into bad is wrong casting – I’ve seen it a thousand times. Sometimes I’ll read a film because I’m up for it as an actor or director, and don’t do it, but then see it after it gets made and released. And sometimes I think ‘Oh my God, how did they f*ck that up so badly?’" he explained to hollywoodchicago.com. "There are usually two reasons for this – one is too many cooks in kitchen, messing with the script and second, it is actors who are wrong for the roles they are cast in."

Zach wrote the film, which was funded by a Kickstarter campaign, alongside his brother Adam. Although they managed to create a wonderful finished piece, it wasn't always easy for the siblings to work together.

"Of course we brawled, but we did make a deal that I think was crucial. I told him I was starring and directing, so the decisions have to be 51 to 49. I couldn’t imagine doing it 50-50, because we would have reached too many dead ends – it’s like Congress," the Scrubs star laughed. "It got intense sometimes, because we’re brothers, and there were days of silent treatments, but then we’d have a heart-to-heart, hug it out, and move on."

Wish I Was Here comes after Zach's 2004 hit Garden State, in which he starred alongside Natalie Portman.
