Neil Young Raises $6 Million For PonoMusic Kickstarter

Neil Young PonoMusic KickstarterNeil Young’s Kickstarter drive to fund the development of his PonoMusic player has concluded, and the singer has raised a total of over $6 million from over 18,000 backers. That total leaves Young’s fundraising drive as the third-largest Kickstarter campaign in the history of the website.

PonoMusic, the long-running digital music project that Young has been working on for several years, made its official debut of sorts during Young’s keynote speech at South By Southwest in March. The Kickstarter was then launched to help raise funds to develop PonoMusic’s digital music player while also taking pre-orders for the device. Kickstarter rewards such as Pono players signed by the likes of Metallica, Foo Fighters, and Young himself, had sold out within the first day of the Kickstarter’s launch.

The Pono player will retail at approximately $399. The device has a storage capacity of 128 gigabytes, enough for 1,000 to 2,000 songs on the Pono platform, which promise to be of higher quality than MP3s.
