subterranea2For those of you old enough to remember playing Pool of Radiance on our Commodore 64s you may have noticed that that special kind of magic seldom appears in today’s AAA market. Everyone remembers those early quests, the simple but tough-as-nails baby steps of the budding genre, and since then, it’s done nothing but become more and more accessible, but at what cost? For those of you seeking a visit back to those old days of discovery and newfound power, Subterranea may be just what the doctor ordered.

Classic gameplay mixed with current-gen sensibilities are what define the unique mixture that is Subterranea, bringing you back to the deep and nuanced turn-based, tactical dungeon crawler, and allowing you to once again create and command your carefully constructed and balanced team of six heroes. Extensive tactical freedom will allow you to do more than simply move and attack, with options such as sneak, feint, rush, and overrun your opponents, and your adventure will have physics-based events that allow you to crumble the cave ceiling, crushing an unexpected foe, or cut the rope supporting a bridge that holds several powerful enemies.

The game may look unpolished in its current state, but the truly unique gameplay elements it brings to the table should not be overlooked. The game is still seeking funding, but our sources say it may very well meet its goal with time to spare, so we can only wait and keep watch on Subterranea, a classic callback to a genre that’s all but been lost.
