novus1The Kickstarter video for Novus AEterno ends with developer Nick Nieuwoudt stating “If you want to play a game where you can build an expansive galactic empire, colonize solar systems, interact with thousands of other players, and run your empire the way you want to you’re going to be able to do that, because that’s the game we’re building.”  Sounds dreamy, doesn’t it?  Well it’s been Nick’s dream for a number of years and he’s finally close to making it a reality, if you have a few bucks to spare.

Novus AEterno is an MMORTS, a genre that hasn’t really taken off in the gaming world despite some peoples’ best efforts.  The developers at Taitale Studios are changing it up a bit by broadening the focus beyond an RTS game with lots of players in a semi-persistent world, to creating a universe where players need to manage economies, alliances, and technological needs in addition to clicking their mouse about the battlefield.

Here’s a bullet point list of some of the more interesting features:

  • Sandbox style gameplay
  • D.I.M.E. gameplay philosophy – Diplomacy. Intelligence. Military. Economics.
  • Extensive use of spies and subversion
  • Ability to hire mercenaries to do your bidding
  • Dynamic research system without tech trees or tiers
  • A near limitless variety of player-designed shipsnovus2

There’s quite a bit more to learn by browsing the Novus AEterno Kickstarter page, as well as the official website.

In a nutshell Novus AEterno could be the long lost cousin of Eve Online, but with a whole new tactical combat layer to think about.

The Kickstarter campaign for Novus AEterno runs until December 19th and has a funding target of $200,000.
